Spray-Foam Insulation

If you make the Midwest your home, you know how harsh the winter season can be. During the winter, temperatures drop below freezing, and snow has been known to fall in the double digits in a single day. In the summer, temperatures can easily escalate into the triple digits, causing schools to close and leaving everyone at home to battle the heat.

Before Mother Nature unleashes her wrath on the region this season, you should have residential spray foam insulation installed.

What Is Spray-Foam Insulation?

Spray-foam insulation serves a similar purpose to other types of insulation such as fiberglass in that it’s designed to keep your home warm and comfortable. However, there is much more science involved with spray foam.

Essentially, the foam, which is installed as a liquid, creates a plastic-like material that expands and dries once applied. There are two types of spray foam insulation — open-cell foam and closed-cell foam — and the type you choose determines the composition of the insulation.

The particular application and desire to control moisture and vapor drive will determine whether open-cell or closed-cell foam would perform the best.

Benefits of Spray-Foam Insulation

Spray foam creates energy efficiency that can otherwise be lost. For instance, an air leak in the walls or ceiling could cause you to lose as much as 40 percent of the energy generated from the heating and cooling systems in your home.

Once sprayed in liquid form, the spray foam then expands in volume to cover any openings before it hardens and insulates your home.  You can save money on your energy bill as a result.

Not only is spray foam environmentally friendly, but it can go where other insulation does not. For instance, if your home has a non-vented attic, you can have the spray foam applied directly beneath the roof. This is not the usual practice with fiberglass because of the condensation that can accumulate on the insulation. However, spray foam is sealed to the ceiling extremely tightly, leaving little opportunity for this to occur.

The important thing to remember about spray-foam insulation is that in order for it to function in the way it was designed, it must be installed properly. If you’re located in Indiana or Kentucky, contact us today for a free estimate from our expert staff.
